The Desert/El desierto
Our journey begins with an introduction to the concept of deserts, highlighting their dry, barren conditions and the special features that make the deserts of South America so unique.
Explore Six Spectacular Deserts:
Atacama Desert (Chile)
Sechura Desert (Peru)
Monte Desert (Argentina)
Patagonian Desert (Argentina)
La Guajira Desert (Colombia)
Chaco Desert (Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia)
Tatacoa Desert (Colombia)
For each desert, students will enjoy descriptive passages in both English and Spanish, followed by engaging comprehension questions. Enhance their learning experience with maps and flashcards that help them locate and visualize these incredible deserts on a South America map!
The unit study also includes:
An introduction to deserts, defining them and explaining their characteristics.
Information on each desert in selected in South America
A country map and flag for each country featured
Country and desert three part cards
A section on Wayuu handicrafts, specifically their traditional woven handbags ("mochilas"). This includes a brief description of the cultural significance of these bags and a blank template for students to create their own Wayuu-inspired design.
I hope this resource will provide simple vocabulary and readings in both languages, making it accessible for bilingual learners.
As an additional study, the unique features of each desert are married with the unique cultural significance and handicrafts by Wayuu people of Colombia.
Immerse your students in the vibrant culture of the Wayuu people of the Colombian La Guajira Desert. Learn about their unique handicrafts - specifically, mochilas. Then let creativity flow with a fun activity where students can design their own Wayuu handbag pattern!
